What is it that fuels each and every one of us in this world? When I was a budding professional I was seeking for answers in my life related to workplace and life in general. I wanted  a mentor who could guide me without judging me and stand by my side whenever I am in need.
This urged me to start an initiative 'Ask Me, Why not ? I want to be a friend and mentor to anyone who wants an answer to what one is facing. The first step to change is to seek  a right advice at a right time and at right place. Therefore, please feel free to ask any questions, your identity will always be protected but  your questions will be answered with practical solutions.

Question 1

Ishita  : My boss is really rough to me and I feel very demotivated and he runs me  down in front of my colleagues . What do I do ?

Ishita ( name changed ) is an assistant manager in a reputed organisation and has been in the organisation for last 5 years .

Me : First of all see whether  your boss is rough with you only , if yes, there is something that is bothering him which you need to openly discuss face to face . Try to talk about his priorities and understand his expectations . Then  honestly start working on it. One thing you must do is to update your boss everyday about your work through formal channel of communication like mail or a meeting at the end of the day. In case your boss is nasty to everyone, you need to passively accept the fact that this is his second nature . You know, Ishita, I would say it is sometimes a great learning lesson to have a bad boss because it helps us to know what are the bad qualities you will never adopt when you will become a boss to your team . It is a silent teacher and helps you to understand what makes a good boss. Remember never waste a good opportunity to learn from a bad boss. All the best, Ishita

Question 2

Manik : During this lockdown I feel completely  wasted . Though  professionally,  I am staging some virtual events of other startups and earning enough to breakeven,  what is worrying me is I am losing my 'self' with every passing day.

Manik had started his own startup an event management company  after gaining 10 years  of sales experience.

Me : Manik, yes we all are facing a tough situation. Undoubtedly, it is a long dark night and we all are waiting for the bright sun to shine. Till then its best to work on your 'self' which you must have ignored for quite sometime. Treat it as a sabbatical leave of two years and focus on your physical, emotional and intellectual self. I will share some easy doable steps:

Physical Self: Start with self awareness of the imperfection which  you are  currently facing. Set a personal measurable goal to correct it. Dedicate one hour everyday on it and call it your  power hour. Do it consistently for a week, extend it to 21 days and then for 3 months to get a visible and definite results. You will be a new you before you join back.

Emotional Balance: This will be worst affected in the current  situation but try to consciously stay away from negative people, negative information & negative self talk. Note you are average of five people who live with . So try to be in connect with ONLY people who transfer positive energy to you by sharing positive thoughts, positive hope that all will be okay and  leaves you with a happy feeling. Another easy way to raise your emotional balance is to help one needy person everyday and thank one person everyday.

Intellectual Growth : This is the best time to upgrade  and update yourself . Try new skills  and become a better version in the  field you wish to  work . Read books or listen to podcast by experts for 30 minutes everyday.  The easy rule to this is  principle of 3-3-3  i.e Note down 3 new things  you read / heard , repeat it to yourself 3 times and share it with  3 friends.

These are self development techniques will help you to become a better version of yourself in the next 3 months . End of this journey you will be a healthy self with raised EQ & IQ . But to all this the key to success is CONSISTENCY. It means whatever you have decided to do, you must do it every single day for 7 days, then 21 days and then 90 days.

Question 3

Shamita: Hi ! Dr Surabhi. Hope you are keeping fine. My question to you is  why am I not taken seriously at workplace and in my personal life . How do i effectively get my point across to others . I send emails, I speak up in meetings and I join them in informal settings as well but I  feel I am ignored . I try to provide  solutions to problems with innovative ideas in order to exceed goals but its frustrating that I cant get through with people who matter to me.  Let me know how to handle it.

She is a smart looking executive with a product company for last 2 years

Me: It is a  good question and we all have faced it  at some stage of our lives . So not to worry everyone outgrow it if they know the way to do it .  But we all outgrow it by practicing some ways which I will share with you .
